A few days before writing the first piece for the blog, Ndumie Funda, a South African, human rights activist, said,
"I am not just your thesis."
I am not sure what made this quote so compelling. Was it her charisma, her membership to four of the most marginalized groups in society (Black, a woman, poor and homosexual) --we have all seen how the liberal world can coo and gather around a marginalized voice that somehow escaped all societal constructs to speak out-- or her unwavering voice? Either way, that statement will thoroughly influence my life forever.
This blog is a Capstone, a Senior project. I will receive a grade for it. However, through my writings, research, and sharing, I hope to find learn more about everything, including myself. This website is not just a thesis, it is a call to myself and others to, in the words of Angela Davis, " no longer accept the things we cannot change" and"Change the things we cannot accept".
Mrs. Funda's words were not the most revolutionary thing I've ever heard, but a reiteration of interior anger I had no words for. In this blog, I cannot promise to say anything new or groundbreaking, but it will be real and honest.
This blog is about celebrating women in all of our complexity, exploring facets of society, improving my writing, and oh, celebrating women.
